FAQ

General Questions

Q: What is MINI DASH?

A: MINI DASH is a compact OBD2 driver display built for performance-focused monitoring. It shows real engine data such as boost and temperatures, can warn you when oil or coolant reaches critical limits, and can run with saved settings even when the app is closed.

Q: Do I need my phone while driving?

A: No. After the first-time setup, MINI DASH runs standalone with your saved settings. Use the app only when you want to change settings, update profiles, configure warnings/shift light, or start/stop logging and download logs.

Q: How does MINI DASH connect?

A: MINI DASH connects via Bluetooth to the included VEEPEAK BLE+ OBD2 adapter. Connect from inside the MINI DASH app during setup. Do not manually pair MINI DASH in your phone’s Bluetooth menu.

Q: Does MINI DASH require an internet connection?

A: No. MINI DASH communicates locally via Bluetooth and does not need an internet connection.

Q: Can I customize the display?

A: Yes. You can switch display modes (Boost, Temps, Accel), choose which sensors are shown, adjust screen orientation, and change brightness in the app. You can also configure temperature ranges (color zones), oil/coolant warning limits, and a shift light. Units can be changed by switching the region (EU / US / UK) in the About tab.

Q: Can I change units (km/h, mph, °C, °F, bar, psi)?

A: Yes. MINI DASH adjusts units automatically based on the selected region. You can switch between EU, US and UK in the About tab to change speed and temperature units.

Q: Is it safe to use?

A: MINI DASH is an additional display and does not replace your car’s factory warning systems. Set up MINI DASH before driving (or let a passenger use the app), keep oil/coolant warning limits enabled and realistic, and use acceleration timing only in legal, safe, closed environments.

Compatibility

Q: Is my vehicle compatible with MINI DASH?

A: MINI DASH works with OBD2 vehicles that use CAN bus (ISO 15765-4). Most vehicles are compatible, including many models from:

  • USA (2008+)
  • Canada (2008+)
  • EU (2008+ gasoline, 2010+ diesel)

Q: Will all sensors work on every car?

A: Not necessarily. Available data depends on what your vehicle’s ECU provides. If a sensor is not supported, the corresponding value may show as blank/dashes or won’t be selectable in the app.

Q: Will MINI DASH work on older vehicles?

A: Older pre-2008 vehicles that do not use CAN bus may not be compatible. Even on compatible cars, some sensors may be missing, which can limit displayed data. Please check your vehicle’s OBD2/CAN compatibility before purchasing.

Functionality

Q: What data can MINI DASH display?

A: MINI DASH can display many common OBD sensors, depending on your vehicle, including:

  • Engine oil temperature
  • Coolant temperature
  • Intake air temperature
  • Ambient air temperature
  • Catalyst temperature
  • Turbo boost
  • Vehicle speed
  • Engine RPM
  • Throttle position
  • Calculated Engine load
  • Absolute Load Value
  • Actual Percent Torque
  • Fuel level
  • Battery voltage
  • Ignition timing
  • Air-fuel ratio (lambda)
  • MAF (mass air flow)

Q: Can MINI DASH alert me about high temperatures?

A: Yes. You can set oil and coolant warning limits. If either reaches your warning limit, MINI DASH will show an overheat warning screen.

Q: What is a shift light and does MINI DASH support it?

A: A shift light is a visual RPM indicator that helps you shift near your target RPM without looking away for long. MINI DASH supports a configurable shift light, including start RPM, shift RPM, strobe speed, and brightness factor.

Q: What display modes are available?

A: MINI DASH supports Boost, Temps and Accel modes. You can also set the orientation to 0°, 90°, 180° or 270°. While logging is active, screen changes are locked.

Q: How accurate is acceleration timing?

A: Accel timing accuracy can vary due to OBD delay (approximately +/- 0.2 seconds). Depending on your region, it measures either 0–100 and 100–200 (EU) or 0–60 and 60–130 (US/UK). Use acceleration timing only in legal, safe, closed environments.

Setup & Installation

Q: How do I set up MINI DASH for the first time?

A: First-time setup is quick:

  1. Plug in the VEEPEAK BLE+ adapter.
  2. Turn ignition on and power MINI DASH.
  3. Open the MINI DASH app and allow permissions (Android may require Location for Bluetooth scanning).
  4. Tap Connect in the app and wait for Connected.
  5. Choose your settings and tap Save and Apply.

Important: Connect from inside the app. Do not manually pair MINI DASH in your phone’s Bluetooth settings.

Q: What if MINI DASH is not found during setup?

A: Check that ignition is on, MINI DASH has power, Bluetooth is enabled, and the adapter is fully seated in the OBD port. Keep your phone close during the first connection and tap Retry. Also ensure Bluetooth permissions are allowed (and Location on Android, if required).

Q: Do I need to open the app every time I drive?

A: No. For normal driving you can simply start the car and MINI DASH will show your saved setup. Use the app when you want to change settings or use logging.

Logging & Data

Q: Does MINI DASH support logging?

A: Yes. You can start/stop logging in the app and download logs to your phone as CSV files. MINI DASH logs the 3 sensors selected in Setup.

Q: How long can MINI DASH record?

A: Approximate recording time per download is about 3.5 hours, depending on usage. If an old undownloaded log exists, the app warns you before overwriting it.

Q: What happens after I download a log?

A: After a successful download, the device log is cleared automatically. To avoid log loss, download logs before cutting vehicle/MINI DASH power.

Q: Can I view logs without being connected?

A: Yes. If CSV logs already exist on your phone, you can open Log History from the connection screen even when not connected.

Q: Can I view charts and statistics?

A: Yes. You can view charts with different resolutions (Raw, 10s, 1m, 5m, 10m), filter by sensor, and see stats such as Min, Median, Average and Max. You can also export/share CSV files.

Advanced Settings

Q: My speed doesn’t match GPS. Can I calibrate it?

A: Yes. Use Setup → Advanced → Speed Scaling (0.80 to 1.20). Calculate: Scale = GPS speed / MINI DASH speed. Example: MINI DASH shows 100 km/h and GPS shows 98 km/h → set scale to 0.98. Speed scaling is global across profiles.
